Whitefield in East Bangalore originated in the late 1800s as a small village. It remained a quite and less engaged suburb near Bangalore until the boom of local IT sector in the late 1990s. The suburban area is now a major part of Bangalore with several companies establishing their base here. Many of the leading industries are also situated in Whitefield like the Hindustan Lever Research Center(HUL). Whitefield is connected with central Bangalore via two major 4-lane roads. First via Mahadevapura Road and second via Varthur Road (also called as HAL Old Airport Road).
